Abdominal Myomectomy

Abdominal Myomectomy

Abdominal myomectomy is a significant surgical treatment that is performed through a standard abdominal incision for “open” surgery. It’s often performed to remove very big and/or many subserosal or intramural fibroids, or when malignancy is suspected. The “bikini cut” is an incision done through the skin on the lower abdomen. The fibroids in the uterus wall are surgically removed. Several layers of stitches are used to suture the uterine muscle back together. Most patients spend 1-2 nights in the hospital after surgery, followed by 6-8 weeks of decreased activity.

Following an abdominal myomectomy, delivery of pregnancies may involve a C-section. This is done to decrease the chances of uterus injuries during childbirth. The requirement for a C-section will be determined by how deeply the fibroids were implanted in the wall of the uterus when they were removed.
